How much do you plan to increase your business revenue by this year (2011)?

Who Moved Your Cheese? It's time to milk your own cow!

If You are Ready - The fear is part of the process...

If this economy has taught you anything.. you should know that you can only depend on yourself and that all smart people have at least two strong sources of revenue. The super smart (those untouched by the economy) have a least four sources. What are your sources?

Today more than ever may be a great time to start a business despite the economic downturn. In fact, current market conditions have created unique opportunities for those thinking about new business start-ups. For example, while home sales are down, there may be more of a need for services such as home improvement and interior decorating in order to increase the home's saleability.

Downsizing and layoffs has led to the availability of talented professionals who find themselves suddenly out of work. This presents an outstanding opportunity for these workers to realize their entrepreneurial dreams.

On the flip side, even if you are blessed to be gainfully employed, now is a great time to consider starting a part-time business to supplement your full-time income and help you save even more for a rainy day.Having the tenacity, commitment and drive to develop a successful business can lead to more control over your long-term financial security and prosperity and your destiny.

Hello Tax Diva! My name is Erika Applewhite and I am a photographer. I am afaid of my own success, Then someone will start exoecting something from me. On the other side of the spectrum, I am afraid of failure, those old "I told you so voices". Luckily, those two balance each other out because of the courageous spirit that I have ;).

Hello Shelia,
My biggest fear is when I get to the point when I need to hire my first employee. All of a sudden you are responsible for not only your career well being, but also someone else's.

Hello, what scares me. Letting other people down. I know I can do the work but life has helped take some of that confidence away and I work that I will make mistakes. My husband would say that I go up to the edge and then back away just when I could make the jump. I am working on that and trying to do something that scares me every day so that I can get past this.

Hello Sheila

What scares me about starting/continuing my business is FAILING! I'm not talking about my business not "making it" because there are several reasons as to why a business close. I'm talking about not doing everything within my power to optimize my business' full potential! In other words, failing myself because I didn't "follow-up through, follow-up, lacked motivation/lazy, learned new skills/technology that would help me, not asked questions, lack confidence, etc.! That scares me alot!

Hi Shelia,

Going forward to launch a business obviously generates many fears but as a photographer, I'll be dependent upon the immediate requirements of potential clients. Photography is not something clients purchase in advance or necessarily plan on "needing." With the proliferation of advanced cameras, the value of professional photography also seems to have been diminished. Many think they can just do it themselves. Since I'm selling a service, I'm concerned about making ends meet when none of my current clients have photographic needs. The sporadic nature of the work has me fearful of how I will make it through the dry spells.

Hi Sheila-
My biggest fear right now is leaving behind a lucrative career that I've spent many years building for a shot at my dream job, which is in an industry-in-transition right now (travel agency).

Hi Sheila,

This is Theresa Weiss of Successful Student. I'm scared of what happens when I get sick and can't "take care of business" or those days when you just feel like you will lose your mind. Right now, its only me servicing my client(s). I don't know if I can let go and trust other people to do what needs to be done.

Hello, My name is Tamara Chisim and my company is Innovative Element and I provide products and services to the Federal Government. What scares me are the many, many obligations I am responsible for such as: 1) Keeping my customers happy by delivering my products on time and with budget 2)Recruiting and retaining good employees 3)Building my customer base 4) Paying my bills 5) making a profit.

I don't want to say that anything scares me. I don't like that word. I'll say what concerns me is the ability to generate business on a consistent basis. When I'm doing business, I can't be looking for clients. And, when I'm looking for clients, I'm not generating revenue. That means I'll have to bring other people into the business for it to be successful. The other concern is making sure I target my business in the right area.

What Scares Me?

At this juncture, what doesn't?

A few examples:

- Will I be able to find enough clients to survive and then grow?

- Will I find too many clients and not have the organization in place to support them?

- Will I be able to charge enough money for my services?

My solace comes from relying on family, friends, my business mentor, and God to supply me with enough daily courage to continue to do the next right thing for my business.

To me being scared is o.k.
But what I do with it is important.

I can be immobilized by fear or I can be energized and push forward anyhow (courage).

Today, I choose the later.

Have a Great Day!

I certainly hope completion of this assignment is not an indication of my business success. I don't consider myself technologically challenged but this made me question my abilities. Thank goodness, Karlayne asked for help and Sean responded. I thought I had completed the assignment days ago until I read Karlayne and Sean's e-mail.

Anyway, I just have one major fear, will I be able to stay focused and committed to one business at a time? I have a history of doing a little bit of this and a little bit of that. I am fully aware that this behavior can contribute to the failure of my business, therefore I am determined to overcome the need to indulge in variety of business'. I use the following quotation as a daily affirmation to align my efforts with success:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is we are powerful beyond imagination. It is our light more than our darkness that scares us. We ask ourselves--who are we to be brilliant, beautiful, talented and fabulous. But honestly who are you to not be so?

What Scares Me About Business?

Success in business is like a good exercise routine. When it comes down to it, it's all about the 'fitness test'. Here's the thing. Up to this point, I liked to think of myself as being pretty fit. One of those savvy, risk taking "entrepreneurs"; you know the type. The ones who have 15 balls in the air. Their juggling seems like a minimal effort and make owning a business look easy and glamorous. They look 'fit' in every sense of the word. What get's noticed most is the RESULT of all the work of 'working out' that they've done. The average person doesn't see all the blood, sweat, and years of tears that goes into the result that you see in front of you (the successful business). Well, since embarking on this journey, the truth about owning a business is beginning to sink in. Owning a business is just that. You OWN the BUSINESS, all of it. The ball is in your court. It starts with your serve and ends with you running the entire court to keep the game going...and then it starts all over again. It's mental fitness, emotional fitness, physical fitness, financial fitness, ...fitness, Fitness, FITNESS! I started out completely confident that I had the formula that would make me a natural for this plan. I thought, "I have 'The Answer'", and then...wait a minute! Something that feels like "fear" set in. I recognized it because, I've done major battle with this "fear thing" before on many fronts. I decided then that I was victorious and had whipped that thing once and for all years ago. So what was this all about? Where did it come from? The truth that I know then reminded me that fear is just "False Evidence Appearing Real". No worries.

So OK, It's day 2 in my official research test and I'm finding that 'The Answer' has so many questions attached to it that this journey is truly going to test my intellectual fitness! So what I haven't worked out in a while?! The truth is I've NEVER worked as hard as I'm about to. I'm a little older now and I'm already beginning to feel that slight soreness that you get after being active (mind and body). You know what I'm talking about. Yeah, it's a little scary. I admit all the research can be a little intimidating. Thoroughness is funny that way. The best thing I remember about working out though, is that once the soreness sets in, it's important to keep moving. Eventually, you get stronger, build more endurance and eventually, the soreness goes away. The result? You feel great. You look even better; think clearer, make better decisions and become more productive. I've just gotten started and I'm already beginning to feel muscles that I haven't felt in years (mental, physical, you name it). Guess what...it feels great! Here's what I know. Fear can be debilitating or motivating. I choose to move. Let's do this!!

I also have to agree with Alisa. I too thought that I had completed this assignment days ago until I saw Sean's response to Karlayne's email. Thanks for the help!

I think its more about uncertainty and lack of knowledge about how to proceed or persist. Maybe my biggest fear is that I will not gain the knowledge and act on this knowledge in a timely fashion and that I will not recognize or be ready for opportunity when it knocks.

What scares me the most is not being successful and somehow bringing detriment to my family/financial situation because of it. My family has already given me the support I need, now I need to make the commitment to myself to give this opportunity all I've got.

Of course fear is real. But most of all it is paralyzing. Think about your life thus far, and write down four things that you would have tried/completed if fear had not set in. Whether it is fear of failure, fear of success, fear of control, or fear of embarrassment - it is real and I am glad that we have confessed it but now it is time to feel it anyway. Let's make it an effort to get knocked down more by going for the Gold (our goals).

I am looking forward to our journey and I hope that you all are ready and willing to make this your best quarter in 2009. It's time for the 4th quarter comeback. Business can be a lot like football but we need to take more chances and fumble.

If you did not put in at least 40 hour last week, prepare to invest the time this week. Do you think that winning football players just show up???

What scare me? Wow... a lot of things scare me. Failure to meet the expectation of the customer; Some extremely down points I might encounter; Financial difficulties; Legal documents; helplessness in difficulties...But, since I was chosen on this boat, I should be confident that I can make things happen. Just like I accomplished Ph.D, even though many things scared me at the beginning and many difficulties during the process, I never gave up...
So, fear nothing from now on, start a new Ph.D project and go for my dream. The most important thing is to enjoy the journey. Life is a journey.
